Silver Payal Buying Guide: Purity, Size, Weight & Price
A payal is sold as a pair, worn as a moving joint and expected to survive repeated contact with skin, clothing, floors and footwear. That makes purity only one part of quality. The pair should also be compared by net silver weight, fit, link construction, clasp, solder finish, sound and written invoice—not simply by how bright it looks under showroom lights.
Start with where and how the payal will be worn
Daily wear
Prioritize a smooth profile, reinforced links, secure clasp, moderate movement and easy cleaning. Very fine projections can catch on clothing or bedding.
Wedding or festive wear
Wider designs, ghungroo, carving and substantial silhouettes can create more presence, but test sitting, stairs and footwear before the event.
Gifting
Do not guess size from age or appearance. Ask for ankle measurement, preferred sound and whether the recipient wears a pair or a single anklet.
Child's payal
Safety and growth checks come before decoration. Avoid sharp edges, loose bells and a fit that can tighten unnoticed.
925 silver vs 999/990 fine silver for payal
Fineness expresses how many parts out of 1,000 are silver. A 925 mark means 925 parts silver and 75 parts alloying metal. A 999 mark means approximately 999 parts silver. Higher fineness means more silver content—not automatically a better design for every use.
| Factor | 925 silver | 999/990 fine silver |
|---|---|---|
| Silver content | 92.5% silver by fineness. | Very high silver content, depending on the stated 999 or 990 grade. |
| Hardness | Alloying improves strength and shape retention for detailed jewellery. | Softer and more malleable; outcome depends heavily on thickness and construction. |
| Daily-wear suitability | Often practical for links, clasps and detailed regular-wear designs. | Can work in substantial traditional construction, but thin elements may bend or dent more easily. |
| Tarnish | Can tarnish because silver reacts with sulfur compounds and alloy metals can affect surface behaviour. | Can also lose brightness or develop surface change; purity alone does not make an item maintenance-free. |
| Buying decision | Choose when durability and detailed construction are priorities. | Choose when high fineness is a priority and the construction is strong enough for the intended use. |
How to check a silver payal hallmark in 2026
BIS currently lists IS 2112:2025 as the standard for silver and silver-alloy jewellery/artefact fineness and marking. BIS's July 2026 jeweller guidelines also refer to HUID verification for hallmarked gold and silver jewellery/artefacts.
- Locate the mark: ask the jeweller to show the BIS mark, fineness and six-character HUID on each applicable article/piece.
- Use magnification: a registered sales outlet should provide a magnifying glass for customers to inspect marks.
- Verify HUID yourself: enter the code in the official BIS Care app's Verify HUID feature.
- Compare details: check that the article type, purity, weight/photo and jeweller/assaying details shown are consistent with the payal.
- Read the invoice: confirm description, net silver weight, fineness and applicable hallmarking/making charges.
How to measure your ankle for a payal
Measure at the exact point where the payal should rest. Use a flexible measuring tape. If you do not have one, use a non-stretch string, mark the overlap and measure it against a ruler. Keep the tape touching the skin without compressing it.
A practical starting allowance is:
These are starting ranges, not universal sizing rules. A wide rigid payal, heavy ghungroo design and flexible chain-style anklet behave differently. Always test the actual design.
- Measure both ankles; use the larger measurement if the pair must be identical.
- Measure later in the day if your ankles commonly swell.
- Wear the footwear planned for the function.
- Walk, climb a step and rotate the ankle.
- Check that the payal cannot slide over the heel when the foot points downward.
- Make sure bells or edges do not strike the ankle bone painfully.
Why pair weight causes buying confusion
A tag may show the weight of one anklet, both anklets together or gross weight including bells and non-silver components. Ask the seller to state the basis explicitly.
| Check | What to ask | Why it protects you |
|---|---|---|
| Pair or piece | Is this price and weight for one payal or the complete pair? | Prevents comparing a one-piece quote with a pair quote. |
| Net silver weight | What is the precious-metal weight excluding non-silver parts? | Shows the weight used for metal value. |
| Pair balance | Do both anklets have similar weight and length? | Improves symmetry and wearing comfort. |
| Removable parts | Are any threads, beads, lac, steel springs or attachments included? | Clarifies value, care and future exchange treatment. |
Weight alone does not equal durability. Look at where the silver is placed. A heavy design with weak jump rings can fail sooner than a lighter design with reinforced high-stress points.
Ghungroo sound, clasp and comfort checks
Sound
Ask to hear the pair while walking, not only while shaking it by hand. Decide whether you want silent, soft or clearly audible movement. More bells can mean more weight, maintenance and snag points.
Clasp
Open and close each side yourself. A secure clasp should operate smoothly without a sharp unfinished edge. For frequent wear, ask whether a safety link or repairable hook is available.
Finish
Run a soft cloth over the inner and outer edges. If threads catch on the cloth, the same area may catch on a saree, sock or skin. Inspect solder joints and the back of decorative elements, not only the front pattern.
Mobility
Flexible links should articulate without stiff sections. Rigid styles should not press into the ankle while sitting. Test both feet because gait and ankle shape can differ.
How silver payal price is calculated
A transparent quotation separates the metal value from workmanship and tax:
Estimated price = (rate for stated silver fineness × net silver weight) + making/other disclosed charges + GST
Some silver workmanship is quoted per gram; some detailed or handcrafted payal may use a fixed charge. Ask which weight is used and whether the displayed rate is for 999, 925 or another fineness. For a local reference, see the Prantij gold and silver rate page, but confirm the exact billing rate and purity at purchase.
When comparing two pairs, normalize all of these:
- same fineness;
- same pair-versus-piece basis;
- net silver weight rather than unexplained gross weight;
- making charge method;
- hallmark/HUID and invoice;
- clasp, repairability and construction.
Buying a silver payal for a baby or child
Children's jewellery needs active adult supervision. Choose a smooth, lightweight design with no sharp points or easily detachable bells/beads. Check fit frequently because the ankle grows and swelling or skin marks may appear before a child can explain discomfort.
- Do not use extra looseness as a substitute for regular resizing; a large loop can catch.
- Inspect the clasp and every bell before each use.
- Remove the payal if it causes redness, indentation, swelling or repeated scratching.
- Follow family and paediatric safety guidance for sleep, unsupervised play and situations where snagging is possible.
- Keep small detached components away from children because they can be a choking hazard.
How to care for a silver payal without damaging it
- Wipe the pair with a clean, soft, dry cloth after wear, especially after sweat or moisture.
- Store each anklet separately in a dry pouch to prevent tangling and rubbing.
- Avoid perfume, hair spray, chlorine, harsh household cleaners and abrasive powders.
- Do not pull knots or stuck links; have the joint opened professionally.
- Use a silver-specific polishing method suitable for the finish. Oxidized or antique finishes can be removed by aggressive polishing.
- Inspect clasp, end rings, bells and high-movement links periodically.
Tarnish is a surface reaction and does not by itself prove that silver is fake. Conversely, a very bright surface does not prove purity; plating and fresh polish can look bright. Use the hallmark/HUID, invoice and professional testing when authenticity matters.
For more care context, see why silver tarnishes and how to clean it. For oxidized, stone-set, antique-finish or adhesive-set pieces, confirm the cleaning method with the jeweller before using any soaking or chemical process.
Frequently asked questions
Is 925 or 999 silver better for a daily-wear payal?
925 silver is often more practical for detailed daily-wear jewellery because alloying improves hardness. Fine silver contains more silver but is softer; construction and thickness remain important.
How much extra length should I add to my ankle measurement?
As a starting point, add about 0.5–1 cm for a close fit, 1–1.5 cm for a regular fit, or 1.5–2.5 cm for a loose/ghungroo fit. Test the actual design because width, weight and flexibility change the fit.
Is silver payal weight shown for one piece or a pair?
There is no safe assumption. Ask the seller to state whether the tag, rate and invoice refer to one anklet or the complete pair, and verify net silver weight.
Does real silver payal turn black?
Silver can tarnish through reaction with sulfur-containing substances, sweat, cosmetics and the environment. Tarnish alone does not prove impurity or fake silver.
Can I verify a silver payal HUID in the BIS Care app?
BIS's July 2026 guidelines refer to HUID on hallmarked gold and silver jewellery/artefacts. For an applicable hallmarked piece, enter the six-character HUID in Verify HUID and compare the returned details with the article.
What should be written on a silver payal invoice?
Look for the article description, net precious-metal weight, fineness/purity, applicable hallmarking and making charges, taxable value, GST and final price.
Why do two payals of the same weight feel different?
The distribution of metal, width, link flexibility, bells, clasp and finishing affect comfort. Wear both pairs and walk; weight alone cannot predict fit.
